The Intergroup Relations (IGR) Program is very purposeful in its blending of research, theory and experiential learning into all of its educational & social justice programs, services and campus initiative practices. This approach strengthens IGR’s capacity to take the appropriate and necessary steps towards, (a) supporting the UCLA community around emerging social identity-based intergroup conflicts/misunderstandings that impact the campus and its climate, (b) encouraging conversations around issues of social identity, interpersonal and intergroup relations/conflict, prejudice reduction, and social justice, (c) promoting understanding of intergroup relations inside and outside of the classroom, and more!
IGR’s program foundations - are philosophically rooted in the intergroup dialogue (IGD) pedagogical model originating from the University of Michigan. IGD infuses a social justice education framework grounded in social theory, and aims to promote understanding of intergroup relations inside and outside of the classroom.
IGD encourages sustained dialogue versus debate or discussion to help individuals explore their own social identities (i.e. gender, race, nationality, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, etc.) and associated positions within the campus community, and then extend those understandings to better conceptualize the world around them. Through the deconstruction of concepts of individual and structural power and privilege using one’s own personal narratives, salient readings/literature/media, IGD participants walk away with a powerful unique learning experience that are empowering and enhances a sense of efficacy towards social action and coalition building.
